Karen Carmody

Karen lived in Paris for over 10 years where she worked for both the Australian Embassy and the Australian Delegation to UNESCO. She returned to Clayton Utz in Banking and Finance, and then to the Private Bar in 1994.

Her practice includes Coronial Inquests acting for parties or as Counsel Assisting; the Family and Federal Circuit Court; child protection; domestic violence matters for either the aggrieved or the respondent; estate matters; and employment law.

Karen was the Deputy and then the Public Interest Monitor (“PIM”) for the State of Queensland. The PIM monitors applications for, and the use of, covert search and surveillance warrants and appears in closed courts representing the public interest when applications are made by the police or the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Karen was also the the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Commissioner from 2016 to 2021. The Parliamentary Committee has oversight of Queensland’s major anti-corruption agency, the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Karen is also an Acting Professional Board Member of the Queensland Parole Board.

She has a Bachelor of Laws from Bond University, Master of Business Administration from Queensland University of Technology and a Master of Laws from the University of Queensland.
